Research
After deciding to make a phone holder, I measured my phone with the case on using a ruler. I wanted to have a phone holder that could stand up on its own. I also wanted to be able to use a charger or headphones while using the holder. I came up with an idea for a holding box with a wedge on the back so the holder could sand on its own. However, I realized this idea was flawed and would not print well. Eventually I decided to make one big wedge with a hook on the side to hold the phone. I decided to have a hook on each side for symmetry and so multiple people could use the holder.
Inventor
Making my design was straightforward and easy since it is a pretty simple design. I used the 2-D sketch, line, dimension, and extrude tools.
However, I decided to change my design during this process. I decided to add a second hook for symmetry and so that two people could use the holder. I also did this to make it look better. Finally, I made the wedge steeper and the hooks longer and thicker to make the holder look better and be sturdier.
Makerbot
After opening my file in Makerbot, I rotated the object so it would be able to be printed and changed it to the correct size. The second picture shows the print preview for my object.
What I Learned
From this project, I learned how to create my own project with little or no direction. I also learned how to design the project based on my wants and needs, and that projects might be changed multiple times before they are done.
